(CBN)New Jersey Governor John Corzine has issued an executive order that  for all intensive purposes closes off all roads and waterways leading from the New York City Borough of  Manhattan into New Jersey.

Corzine has activated the New Jersey National Guard and ordered them to use all “necessary force” to  stem the mass exodus of NYC homeless individuals over the Hudson and into the Garden State in response to NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg’s initiative paying for its homeless to leave New York City to the destination of their choice. That choice has overwhelmingly been New Jersey bringing the already overburdened infrastructure of Newark and surrounding communities to the brink of collapse and anarchy.

The NYC homeless  program, which has been in operation since 2007, has sent people back to Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Puerto Rico and even Paris. Sometimes the travel comes with big price tags like $2,500 to go to South Africa.  It has been a mystery why thousands of homeless of flooded over the Hudson into Jersey but Corzine has his suspicions.

In what has become known as the “Free Food Flotilla” thousands have made their way across the Hudson under cover of darkness in abandoned vehicles allegedly dredged from the Hudson and retrofitted by NYC engineers for the voyage.

While Governor Corzine has stated that he is happy the dredging of these vehicles from the Hudson has solved the Jimmy Hoffa murder mystery, he would resist “with all necessary force” Bloomberg’s brazen and illegal attempt to collapse the economic infrastructure of the  financially troubled area  and subsequently annex the Jersey/Hudson shoreline into West Manhattan.

Corzine stated that the Coast Guard had abandoned all hope of stopping the “floata-car” flotilla.  The NYC homeless exodus by foot has overwhelmed the George Washington Bridge bridge bringing auto traffic to a standstill.

Thugs, crazies, and out of work stock brokers are roaming Newark bars and local docks with fistfuls of hundred dollar bills obtained by cashing in Bloomberg travel vouchers on the black market.  Drug smugglers have already begun to take advantage of the general confusion and the helplessness of the National Guard, Coast Guard and local New Jersey State Police.

Governor Corzine, in a nationally televised address stated that he had no choice but to exercise the the sovereign right of New Jersey to protect its borders under the 10th Amendment.  He stated that as of 12.01 a.m last night New Jersey had officially succeeded from the United States and he was ordering the  New Jersey National Guard to destroy the primary bridge from Manhattan into New Jersey.

The reaction of the city of Newark, bearing the brunt of the exodus has been near hysteria. All bridges over the Hudson have been swarmed with homeless  towing a strange armada of shopping carts, animals, and makeshift cardboard box homes.

President Obama was reached for comment while spending the weekend at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC.  When asked how the White House would respond to this crisis, he inquired whether he had won or lost New Jersey in the primary and whether the New Jersey Giants football team was expected to contend this season.  He declined further comment other than to state that he and family would be taking in a Broadway show later that evening.

I recently read an article about the recent launch of a web site  offering support and advice for men and teens with eating disorders.  A 23 year old named Sam Thomas developed the site  after developing bulimia as a teenager.  He stated that he  endured years of bullying at school as a result of his disease.  He related that one doctor even told him that there was nothing wrong with him as eating disorders only affect females.  The name of the web site is “Men Get Eating Disorders Too.”

I think this is a great idea.  I am right there with Sam.  I am acutely aware  that Men Do Get Eating Disorders Too.  I know this because for several years I suffered from Bulimia. I experienced the stigma, the unwillingness to tell anyone, the isolation, and the health effects.

I empathize with any male sufferer being too ashamed and embarrassed to seek treatment.  I went through a three year brutal battle with bulimia while a student at Penn State University.   If you think that it is a disease under-reported by men in the 21st century  try being a 21 year old male bulimia sufferer on a college campus of Forty-Thousand in 1981.

Treatment for an eating disorder is for the most part not going to be anything a male 18 year old freshman college student contemplates. I was not about to ask for medical or other help.  I did not even tell my family.   I went through several emotional battles within myself.  There is the overwhelming feeling of shame.  I would have rather told my family I wanted a sex change than I was throwing up after every meal.  You have no context for understanding what you are going through.  You believe that once  you are thin enough to have reached your goal all your social problems will be solved.  Unfortunately the mirror tells you that you are never thin enough.

There is no doubt that in the hot-bod, infinite image explosion,  G-Q generation we live in, men have become more  aggressive in trying to emulate the male model types they see in various types of media.  I never saw it that way.  In the pre-MTV and Directv world of my college days, you were simply not exposed to those types of images to any significant degree.  I equated being thinner with being more accepted and popular.  I was not comparing myself to television and other media images.  I was comparing myself to the people I saw around me on a daily basis.  My perception going through high school was that there were no fat popular kids.  I  was not a model.  I was just your average fat kid trying to fit in and wanting to be popular like the thin kids seemed to be.  I wanted that life.  I wanted any life but mine.  In order to help my weight along I decided to get into long distance running.  I eventually worked my way up to running  10 -20 miles a day, 7 days a week.  I would run 10 in the morning and the same in the evening. I was always training for one marathon or another. When the day was over I scarf down a 2lb bag of peanut M&Ms.  I would then head straight to my next best friend, the toilet, to puke it all up.  This behavior was repeated with pizza, fast food etc. There were days that between not eating, puking after I ate and running long distances I was too dehydrated and weak to even get out of bed.  No matter how much weight I lost or how thin I became I always saw the same person in the mirror.  It was some beastly kid who still needed to drop a few lbs that had no friends.

In the span of one year I went from 230 lbs to 165 lbs at 6′2.  As appealing as that may seem to some, it was a brutal, almost deadly ride that I would not wish on my worst enemy. In my mind being thinner  was the only possible route to social acceptance.  I was not trying to reach some unattainable model goal, I was simply trying to fit in.  The problem is that regardless of why you think you need to either starve yourself or binge and purge the reflection in the mirror never ever changes until you are dead.  About 10 percent of those suffering from Bulimia will ultimately die from the disease.

Fast forward to present day.  Today as I sit here writing this in at 230lbs in 2009.  I still hold the battle scars from my struggles over 25 years ago.  The mirror images fueling the disease also lead to other issues such as alcohol and steroid abuse.  I was able to beat the eating and binging part by replacing it with years of self-exploration and getting comfortable me.  The mental and mirror images will stay with me for life.

The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding(FFEU) headed by Hip Hop legend Russell Simmons and Rabbi Marc Schneier in conjunction with the World Jewish Congress United States and the Islamic Society of North America, hosted a group of 28 rabbis and imams from 10 European nations. The purpose was to take a big step in improving historically strained Muslim-Jewish relations.

If the dialogue in the social media universe, particularly Facebook is any indication of that understanding, they have a lot of work to do.

I recently spoke to Simmons’ Political Director, Michael Skolnik about the need to pay more attention with more urgency to the lack of said understanding spawning racial and ethnic hatred in the social media universe. In particular, the popular social networking site, Facebook.

Facebook just hit 250 million active users. It proudly, unofficially bills itself as the “4th largest country” in the world. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated:

“For us, growing to 250 million users isn’t just an impressive number; it is a mark of how many personal connections all of you have made, and how far we at Facebook have to go to extend the power of connection to the billions of people around the world,”

“Billions of people around the world”

That’s a staggering number if achieved. Lets just talk millions. Within the borders of the new “4th largest country” are millions of Jews, Muslims and other religious and ethnic groups. Many, as in the terrestrial world, fighting with each other by way of countless Facebook groups designed to denigrate, humiliate and infuriate.

A sampling of some of these groups shows just how much hatred is flowing in a medium where the message is spreading with terrifying speed. A matrix like environment that if not already, will soon be most influential medium in the world in the propagation of racial and ethnic hatred. According to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, there has been a 30 percent increase in hate groups on Facebook and YouTube alone. In addition they have identified approximately 10, 000 problematic hate and terrorist web sites hate games and other internet postings.

Lets take a look at some of the Facebook groups involved.

1. “Fuck Islam”

“This group does not promote any religion. The reason we oppose Islam is that it is false. It does happen to be dangerous for civilization and personal freedom, but the most central aspect to this religion is that it is wrong about the Quran, it is wrong about the value of Muhammad, it is wrong about marriage, it is wrong about government, it is wrong about sin, and it is wrong about god. Fuck Islam.”

2. Fuck Judaism

“Let’s critizise(sic) the most racist religion on earth!”

3. Fuck Jews With a picture of Hitler and a Swastika

4. Muslims

5. Klu Klux Klan Has a photo attached captioned “Die Jews”

6. Fuck Israel And It’s Holocaust Bullshit

This is a small sampling of hate groups on Facebook. The individual groups numbers range from the single digits to thousands. In a “country” of 250 million, the cumulative analogous numbers of racists bigots and other haters promoting Islamaphobia, antisemitism and racial bigotry is frightening.

Facebook has resisted doing much of anything to combat this problem taking the position that beyond a basic need to censor against violent speech and the most obvious and virile of hate rhetoric, it is not their problem at all. They are simply the medium or the soapbox.

In the interest of simplifying it’s business model and keeping stress off its infrastructure, Facebook has crafted a “hate speech policy” that relies on linguistic semantics, “binary certainty” and what they appear to believe are 1st amendment ideals.(The First Amendment does not apply to speech within social networks)

It reads as follows:

‘You will not post content that is hateful, threatening, pornographic, or that contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.”

Call me crazy but the above listed groups seem hateful to me. Am I missing something?

Real translation? Hate speech is whatever Facebook says it is on any given day. There does not appear to be any consistent definition applied or standardized enforcement of any definition at all. This has allowed hate groups aimed at Jews, Muslims and other religious and ethnics minorities to grow with astounding speed and flourish within the worlds 4th largest country’

This is the level of ethnic understanding on Facebook. It is a free for all. It is time for an additional voice. A voice that can help reach the ever growing Facebook user base and more importantly those setting hate speech policy.

I hope A Foundation For Ethnic Understanding can be forged in our new fourth largest country, Facebook.
