My friend from HS, Alex Pribble played for Cal, and he's no bench warmer. He even wears a "chai" necklace. Oh, and I thought this was funny/cool/relevant, from his bio: "played for the U.S. team at the inaugural Maccabi Australia International Games"

:) and not even a unique problem to Judaism. Recently read about a very talented Muslim girl who plays basketball incredibly well, follows hijab (lot of extra clothes on the court) and needs prayer space to fulfill her daily requirements (couple of corners for her including the coaching office etc.) By the time she gets to college, pressure will be intense to forego her practises.

Many Christians who still follow their "keep holy the Sabbath" from the J-man, who was an observant Jew from birth to death, are also pressured to play on their designated days by the apparant majority of secular agencies who believe weekends are made for sports. (This varies between Sat. & Sun. depending. For the first several centuries, it was Shabbat as well for all Judeo-Christians.)

Alternately, the First Peoples of North America were mainly forbidden to practice their rituals, gatherings, and religious ceremonies (some of which were athletic in nature). This was a means of oppression, extermination, and even genocide: the function of gathering as community was social/traditiona/cultural vitality, unity, transmission of all that is vital.

Thanks for the read B. Also found the chemo story compelling (I think you posted it?) Regardless of religion, there are many good reasons to look for alternates from the giant pharmaceuticals & their well-intended medical menials who are, probably like the judge, going on the best info they have available. The arrogance of the status quo is alarming. A similar case ran in my hometown a few years back. The boy was forced into treatment and died. @anndraya
