Given the many, many other tragedies of this nature in recent years, including in the NFL, this ignorance is not merely inexcusable, but criminal. Denial of water does not make someone a better football player. There was an element of sadism involved here.

Brian, there is NO excuse for a coach who is not up to date with current medical standards. When I was in HS, we had similar situations were water was denied and players best interest went unheeded in the name of "toughness". Today, with what we know now, this coach is negligent in his responsibility to each and every player on that practice field. We have had way too many instances of players having life threatening injuries and deaths due to "old school" standards. I can remember being handed salt tabs before going on the field in HS and then not being provided water or a break in action for hours on end. I'm surprised more players didn't die. While this may not be a criminal matter, the civil ramifications of this case hopefully will cause more "red neck" coaches to think before they push a player to a point that I know they couldn't go themselves! Time to pay up big time, but this guy needs education, not incarceration!

Individuals who find themselves in criminal matters that involve death or violence need competant criminal defense attorneys. This case seems particularly rare in that coaches aren't usually held accountable for such things.

My initial impression when I heard about the story was that it was just another case of an overly litigious society. However, after learning that the coach allegedly denied water to the athletes I quickly changed my tune. That's not just horrendous judgment - it's abusive and ignorant. The military forces its people to drink water in hot climates during training. Are they wimps? Didn't think so.
