I think we have a bit of time before call going back to the moon this century "in jeopardy" since we haven't even completed the first decade yet. As much as we can proably learn by going back to the moon and other places in space I think it is a waste of resources when there are so many other more pressing issues. What we can learn from the moon will mean squat if we can't figure out a way to not go to war of over food and water which I can guarantee will be the next big thing we fight over.

RE: "The Apollo missions were abandoned because we simply had nowhere to go from there. We didn’t possess the technology, budget or public support to advance the program. We shifted our emphasis to less ambitious goals that were within our technological and financial reach leaving Star Trek visions behind."

Apollo was abandoned in order to divert funds to the Space Shuttle and Skylab program. One of the last of the Saturn V rockets was used for the Skylab orbital laboratory back in 1973.

There were A LOT of technological advancements made during this program including simple things like Kevlar and robust inventions like computer controlled machining that's in use throughout worldwide industries today. The very first practical fuel cell was also a direct result of Apollo. The flight computers were also one of the driving forces behind early research into integrated circuits. Tempur-Pedic is even an offshoot product.

You can check out more of NASA's contributions that have been commercialized at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_Spinoff .

Should we go back? Definitely, but not before we fix the Diebold machines!

Great article. I'm a huge fan of space exploration and certainly feel that manned missions to the moon - and especially Mars! - warrant pursuit. The "trickle down" effect of such pursuits on new technology and our economy cannot be matched. Sadly, people often forget about this when they stand against space exploration programs. I'm quite saddened that Obama and McCain are not pro-NASA. :(

I am also interested to see how the private sector advances this industry.
