The blogosphere ramped up the subject even one more notch when newly sworn in Governor David A. Paterson and his wife both admitted that they had both strayed during a rough patch in their marriage.
This morning, I was watching The Today Show. They were doing a segment on infidelity and monogamy. There were several guests of very high academic credentials. There were several interesting points made:
- 1. 1 out of 4 people know someone that has strayed. Is that all? I would think the actual number is higher, especially in light of the stat that 1 in 5 adults in monogamous relationships have cheated. Keep in mind that these are just the ones that admit they have….
- 2. Monogamy goes against a billion years of evolution. There is a basic biological drive to have more than one mate. We forget that we are animals on this planet as thousands of other species who have the same drive which is to reproduce. The point was made that it is our ability to reason and define a moral code that separates us from the pack. We are however using that reason to fight against the drive of evolution….
- 3. Males are more likely to cheat. Why? Because we can…. Biologically we are better “equipped” than women to have sex more frequently. When you combine that with the basic drive, the male needs all the reason and moral code he can get……
There is an interesting survey entitled “Many Cheat For A Thrill, More Stay True For Love” click on the link to check it out…
Finally, do you know the only creature on this planet that is monogamous for life?
Answer: THE FLATWORM!
MORAL OF STORY?
When your spouse or significant other tells you “YOU ARE LOWER THAN A WORM”, she knows what she is talking about….

I received this response on my DIGG post.
So you are JUSTIFYING adultery? How very “progressive” of you. Actually, if she wanted a mate who would not cheat, she should have married me, or someone like me. And there are PLENTY of those out there. In 24 years in the military, I had NUMEROUS chances to cheat. I was stationed alone in such adulterer’s dream countries as Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and South Korea. As somewhat of a celebrity when I worked in radio and TV, women threw themselves at me. But cheating on my wife never even occurred to me. I guess men who lack moral courage justify their weakness by thinking that most men have no sense of honor.’
I WOULD NOT SAY NO SENSE OF HONOR BUT IN THAT RESPONSE I WOULD SAY NO SENSE OF HUMOR…..

1. I completely agree with comment #2 and have tried to support the idea and convince others I was right. Ironically any of the men I’ve dated or friends of mine have strongly disagreed with me. I think it’s because at the end of the men are more threatend by physicl infidelity whereas women are more threatned my emotional infedelity.
2. I COMPLETELY disagree with “Biologically we are better “equipped” than women to have sex more frequently”. I think it’s just the opposite. Not be to graphic, but for men there is a recovery period after orgasm before they can perform again. That recovery period from what I hear grow as a man ages. A woman can have orgasm after orgasm after orgasm with no recovery period or need for a purple pill.
As for the gentleman’s comment above, fidelity and monogomy is really an American value. We’re a very puritanical society, and if you look at other European cultures it is very common for men and women to have a mistress and a manstress. I’m not saying I agree with it or am promoting it. However it is decision based on values and beliefs and has nothing to do with human nature or desires.

I created a poll and was wondering what you all thought. Do you think Political wives should stand by their cheating spouses? Click on my name to vote in the poll and see the results.

I don’t think its a simple yes or no question. People make mistakes. If every spouse booked when a major relationship mistake is made there would be no marriages left. The bigger question is whether the person is comfortable the behavior will not be repeated….

Dalynn –
In terms of actually reproducing, women sometimes do have a longer recovery period (ever heard of 9 months?) than men. Brian’s point being biological, I think it’s safe to infer he was talking about the need to reproduce, not just to copulate.
Just throwing that out there…
